One issue I’ve been examining throughout my campaign is prison reform. How a society treats the incorrigible or the deplorable says a great deal about who we are.
There are bad people. If you commit the crime, you do the time—we all agree on that. But even those who are incarcerated deserve to be treated with a basic level of dignity and decency. They’re still human beings, and how we treat them reflects our values as a society.
I’ve felt strongly about this issue since I announced my campaign. I struggled with the video because I’ve seen difficult things before during my excessive force cases in the 1990s, but never with today’s technology.
What concerns me is that our current Attorney General, for whatever reason, appears to have a real problem with the Department of Correction. That’s a serious issue, and one that deserves attention.
